Somalia:campaigner speaks out media crisis.

the chairman of Associated Somali Journalists (ASOJ) Dahir Abdulle Alasow, who talked to one of the widely read online Somali websites, has expressed his sorrow over the continuation of the gross human violations against the Somali journalists operating inside Somalia giving a little hope of saving the media people.

Mareeg.com had an interview Mr. Alasow who is among the campaigners for the journalists’ rights and asked him several questions as below:

Q1:What is the current state of press freedom in Somalia-could you describe the situation?

A1:Yes after greetings, as I am Somali Journalist Chairman, The free press in Somalia currently is in drastic conditions and its people can expect to face killing, injuring, intimidating sometimes they keep silence to the truth prefer to broadcast bias news due to life threats from the warring sides, also the targeting killing behind by Al-Shabaab Group.

Q2:Mr Dahir Abdulle Alasow,you are famous Journalist and always you write sensetive stories about Somalia,Do you think the political atmosphere in Mogadishu is obstructing the development and progress of independent press in Somalia?

A2:The political atmosphere in Somalia do obstacle to the progress of freedom of media as it is not liked the people in the politics struggling for the power in the country which had been suffering countless of human violations. The biggest challenge journalists face is Islamist hardliners who are worst than the warlords. There are people becoming journalists under these dirty conditions to serve for their people out of the crisis. Despite the journalism went under attack for the past two years, it is still remain active and never give up to put the truth out.in this year 2009

Q3:Are people still becoming journalists under current conditions? Does independent journalism remain largely active?

A3:despite facing many hardships over their duties, the media people in Somalia currently decided to support the peace process and stop exaggerating the war and grab public support for the new government and also get rid of the unlawful rebel movements like Khawarij Al-Shabaab links to Al-Qaeda.
