US confirm attack on Somalian target

 BBC  01 /May/2008  Waagacusub.com

The US military has confirmed it carried out an attack on what it describes as a known al-Qaeda target in Somalia.

Somali sources have confirmed that a senior commander of the al-Shabab Islamist insurgent group was killed in an air-strike on a house earlier today.

Aden Hashi Eyrow was the commander of al-Shabab, a militia with links to a group of Islamic courts which briefly controlled much of central and southern Somalia in 2006.

The Islamic courts were routed when Ethiopian forces entered Somalia in support of the country's weak interim government.

Al-Shabab has grown in strength in the past few months, taking control of large areas of the country.

It is impossible to verify claims that al-Shabab is allied to the al-Qaeda terrorist network.

Captain James Graybeal from the United States Central Command confirmed that an attack took place.

"The United States Central Command conducted an attack against a known al-Qaeda target and military leader in Somalia on the first of May," he said "The United States is committed to the global war on terror and pursuit of terrorists wherever they operate."

The air assault is the fourth military operation by US forces in Somalia since January last year.
