Somalia: France calls for UN anti-pirate force .

News English  13/April/2008  Waagacusub.com

Somalia has congratulated the French military for its operation against a gang of pirates who captured a luxury yacht and held its crew hostage.

French helicopters dropped troops inside Somalia to arrest six suspected pirates, whom Paris intends to try in an international court.

The waters off Somalia are notorious for attacks by pirates. The crew of the French yacht, who were freed after a protracted negotiation and the payment of a ransom, knew the risks they were running.

They had been sailing from the Seychelles to the Mediterranean when they were captured.

It is understood the French forces recovered at least half of the ransom money.

The crews are now on their way to the French naval base in Djibouti from where they will be flown home.

The French Prime Minister Francois Fillon has said called for a UN sponsored anti-pirate force to stop anything similar happening again.
